Before we get into the big topic of the day: bloating, and how to fight back against the body image issues it brings with self love, I’m going to ask yo to do something. Are you ready? As you scroll through this post I want you to keep this concept in the back of your mind: variance. AKA malleability, the state of being ever-changing.
Belly Bloat: Two Truths and a Lie
Throwback to my brunette dayszz
Not your typical #transformation photo, am I right? Would you believe me if I told you that these photos were taken the same day, only about six hours apart? The first was right after my Blogilates workout at about 11 A.M. (rocking that POP Flex activewear aw yeeahh) and the second was right before dinner. Yes, *before dinner. Which means no, it’s not a food baby. Just bloated! There was a time in my life when I’d be ashamed to post the photo on the right, refuse to even look at my belly in the mirror when it wasn’t lean. But here’s some truth for you:
1) Who you are is unchanged by the form your tummy chooses to take – be it toned up or blown out.
2) Pictures don’t always show the full story. A flexed and ab-y you on the left is no more “you” than the one depicted on the right. Both are beautiful, natural, and worth celebrating.
3) Bodies are always changing. Last week I made a Youtube video all about body image and learning to lead with self love. And the main theme of that video is that you may wake up one morning and feel hot. A couple hours later you may look in the mirror and feel not so hot. Good news is, this cycle will repeat. Only thing that is always changing is your perspective. It’s all relative and nothing is permanent when it comes to bodies and bellies.
How to Beat the Bloat Faster
Belly bloat is neither comfortable nor exciting, regardless of it being totally natural. So while bloating will probably always pop up from time to time, here’s a few self love approved strategies to keep the anxiety associated with belly bloat away.
1) Keep Busy
When I’m stressing about something silly, my mom always tells me to stop throwing myself a pity party. And what better way to be your own best party pooper (it’s a good thing, promise) than to leave no brain space for it. Pick up an extra shift at work, pick out a challenging book, or just pick off your nail polish and repaint them if that’s your thing. For me, just watching Netflix in bed doesn’t cut it. I need my mind to be taken away from the bloat completely, but if TV works for you – got for it.
2) Count Your Blessings
Remember everything in your life you have to be grateful for, and how many people dream of living somewhere as safe as you, attending school like you, and being blessed with enough to eat like you. Better yet? make a list of all your accomplishments that you’re proud of. You did those things because you’re amazing, not because you have a flat stomach.
Sometimes bloating can be painful, especially if it’s mixed with stress. Lay on your back with your knees to your chest, and move your knees in a circular motion. Next, lay flat on your back and massage your stomach gently with fists. I always feel better after showing my belly some love.
