Sincerest apologies my friends for the hiatus on Market Haul Monday like right after I introduced it to y’all. I swear I didn’t intend to be sucha tease. But here’s what happened:
- was in Panama for a week and didn’t do much grocery market shopping
- car was out of service for two weeks after I got home so I was pretty much getting food when it was offered / brought to me
Enough excuses though, cause I promise I’m making up for it when I show you the fridge & pantry staples I picked up for this week. Market hauls aside though, I actually do have something else of importance to introduce to you today: why jealousy is bad for feminism. And how I was a bad feminism recently. We’re going to launch into that first, and wrap with the market haul at the end of the post. Stick around!
Have you ever been in a relationship and it’s all good, you’re totally happy and secure about it until – a female friend comes into the equation. A darn well physically attractive female friend who pulls off that whole “one of the guys” thing. And no matter how much you love and trust your man, she irks you. I know I can’t be alone in this.
It may sound trivial. Actually, you know what, it is so completely trivial. But you know what aren’t trivial? Feelings. Yup, we all are entitled to feel things uniquely and when it comes to the feeling of jealousy, logic isn’t usually involved anyways. So when a gorgeous new gal pal came into my boyfriend’s life, despite my brain telling me to chill the f*** out, the jealousy set in and my emotional side took over. And what did it begin to do? Pick the poor girl apart.
I’m not proud of this (like at all) but I’m hoping y’all will cut me some slack because I really think we’ve all been there. We encounter another female who intimidates us for one reason or another, and instead of just celebrating her for doing her thing, we internally begin to put her down to make ourselves feel better. I did this. I found reasons not to like her based on her looks, her vibe, everything. And then I realized something: that’s a really crappy thing to do. And it’s also not being a good feminist.
Feminism is as much about women working together to empower one another as equaling the playing field with men, in my opinion. Harboring jealousy for another woman, and using it as an excuse to undermine her, is not okay – even if it’s just in your head. Verbalizing that unwarranted jealousy is even more not okay.
So I want us to take a pledge together, right now, to be better feminists and more responsible, empowering women. To not let jealousy, in any form, influence our opinion of another woman. To celebrate one another for all the ways we are different, and learn from it too! I may never be “one of the guys”, but I can and will be one of the girls to change how women interact with one another for the better. Starting now.
~ Market Haul Monday ~
Now that I’ve given your noggin something to think about, how’s about we give your tummy something rumble over. Shall we?
Starting off with the leafy & colorful because I’m actually quite impressed with myself for buying spinach AND lettuce with the intention to start eating salads again. I used to eat the ReadyPac ones all the time – super convenient and delicious – but since they’re not gluten free, my salad consumption is way slacking.
Finally decided enough was enough and committed to making my own. Let’s see how it goes. Also purchased:
- frozen green beans – which I love to sautee with turkey
- mini bell peppers – for the aforementioned salads
Of course I’d go from veggies to the good stuff. Can you blame me? Last week I realized how perfect that Perfect bars would be to munch on after my morning workouts and before class. Because I really hate spending big bucks on something I don’t even enjoy eating at school. I’d rather spend big bucks on something I love. Also picked up:
- Peanut Butter Co Dark Chocolate Dreams (will always be my favorite flavor)
- Katz GGF chocolate donuts – more of a cake-y than traditional fried donut texture, but still darn good.
Fruits and Dairy]
An avocado is a fruit…right? Yeah, let’s go with that. Purchased 3 avos and what the cashier referred to as “industrial sized” bananas along with three Fage yogurts which I’ve figured out do not bother my stomach. Many Greek yogurts do, but I have this theory it’s more to do with the artificial additives / sweeteners than the dairy itself, does anyone else share my view on this?
PS you see 0% and 2% fat there because I literally don’t even look at the fat type. I picked them based on flavors 🙂
Grains & Snacks]
Finally found an oatmeal sub that I can get on board with…buckwheat! It’s got a very similar texture and taste profile to oatmeal, but nutritionally I’m not sure how it compares. You dietitians, let me know in the comments. Also into my basket went:
- Udi’s GF whole grain bagels – good, but I think after trying I do like the white bagels better
- Pirates Booty – white cheddar pop corn for my readers outside the US
Guys, KRAVE jerky was on sale. That never happens. *squeals*
- Ian’s GF chicken nuggets – these are so NOT going to last long
- Angus Beef Burgers – thought I’d switch up my usual turkey burger + green bean combo
- Turkey Sausage – bought mainly because I couldn’t believe they were GF and I seem to always be low on protein
- Deli turkey breast
Thanks for accompanying me on my market haul, and tell me:
What are you most excited to eat from your shopping trip for the week?
