Call me cliché, but some of my favorite self care indulgences reek of luxury:
- taking a mini day-cation
- checking into a nice hotel
But what if your favorite way to treat yo’ self didn’t have to be such an indulgence? What if it didn’t have to break the bank? What if I told you that you could budget your way to having that $100+ massage or staying in that $150+ hotel room once a month?
Budget Like Your Life Depends On It
Because, let’s face it, it sort of does. Let me rephrase: budget like the amount of happiness and peace you’ll have it your life depends on it. Because it definitely does. You know feelings of happiness and peace that you wish you could bottle up and save for a rainy day? Guess what? You CAN. In a society that glamorizes mindless productivity and insomnia, it’s easy to forget why self care exists. Self care is there so you can invest in that thing (or things) that give you joy and peace. Whatever it is that makes your world feel less overwhelming and more like a place you want to hang out in for a bit – that’s what we are going to budget for.
Time To Be Picky and Choosey
You can’t do it all. But that’s okay, because I assure you that at least 80% (and probably more like 95%) of the things you’re currently spending you’re hard earned cash on aren’t contributing at all to your happiness or peace of mind. I’m not talking about things like rent, groceries, utilities, etc. Those are necessities. I’m suggesting you get picky and choosey about the extras, because you’ll find that you only have to eliminate a couple of things to free up $100-$200 a month for that spa service or quiet night alone that you know would benefit all aspects of your health and well being.
Self Care Budget Break Down
Let me use myself as an example. I was lucky enough to get a guest pass for the most high end gym / club in my town, fully equipped with gorgeous, private rooms to exercise in + the steam room from heaven + the most clean, stylish, and well supplied ladies room ever. After one day of using the facilities, I left feeling so refreshed, revitalized, and ready for my day. I couldn’t remember a time I had felt that happy and at peace. No sooner had I left the club that I began to mourn the experience.
Sigh, too bad I can’t do this more often. If only I had more money, then I could afford the membership.
But here’s the thing. I had the money. (And you do too). I was just spending it in the wrong places. So I started really thinking about where I’m spending my money on extras. And how much of that I would need to eliminate to reach my $150 a month membership. Could it be done? Actually, it was easy. Like lots of ladies, I enjoy a good manicure. Well with gels or acrylics that costs $30 to get done. Let’s say I do that twice a week. I could easily pocket $60 towards my membership just by letting my nails be natural. Would I rather have sleek nails or daily (or monthly) revitalization and joy? Easy choice. The same can be said for daily latte runs at Starbucks, eating out when you could pack a lunch, etc. It adds up. But it doesn’t have to.
You Deserve To Feel Amazing
Maybe you don’t want to eliminate eating out from your budget. Maybe that favorite meal, alone or with company, is your self care. If it gives you peace of mind and a slice of joy – stick with it. If it doesn’t? Let it go for something that does do those things. Because you deserve to feel amazing. Also, here’s the secret nobody tells you. You don’t have to be rich to live luxuriously. All it takes is some thought, careful picking, and a bit of budget.
