There was a time where I would see the caption “PROTEIN Pancakes!” or “Protein cookies!” on Instagram and my insides would light up like if Ryan Gosling had just winked at me. Heck, I was even responsible for captions like that. And if my protein-licious captions gave you Ryan Gosling like excitement, well..I’m sorry. I’ve since seen the error of my ways. I’ve since eliminated protein powders from my diet all together. And I hate to burst the protein bubble (has anyone made that yet??) but I’m going to make the case that you should give them up too.
Remember when I told you guys why I don’t eat Quest bars? Well, I steer clear of protein powders for many of the same reasons. The foremost being – my stomach. More specifically, the way my stomach
processes does not process synthetic protein, whey, and a shit ton (pun intended) of fiber. I promise not to talk about farts too much – we did that already in the Quest bar discussion. But just know the same applies.
side note: My opinion is based on protein powders from the following brands Cellucor, About Time, Dymatize, Quest, and Vega Sport
Why I Used Protein Powders Then VS Why I Don’t Now
|Because 70 calorie cookies and cake for breakfast seemed to good to be true.||Because when things sound too good to be true, there's usually a catch. Like the fact that 70 calorie cookies won't get rid of your craving for the real thing. And cake for breakfast is not healthy, especially when you're missing out on nutrients from the real, whole foods you would be otherwise eating.|
|Because protein is the cleanest macronutrient and eating a lot of protein will make you thin||Because fats and carbs are just as necessary and healthy for your body. Being thin is not as important as being healthy and happy.|
|Because the gurgling in your stomach and the inability to poop is a small price to pay for beauty||Because stomach gurgling and the inability to poop are warning signs that your digestive system is being harmed and can lead to permanent damage (take it from someone who knows). And beauty comes in all sizes.|
|Because my protein powder baked goods and concoctions are safe foods.||Because food FREEDOM. Because recovery is worth it.|
If you truly love the way supplementing protein powders into your diet makes you feel, then by all means go right ahead. But first ask yourself, “Am I eating this because I enjoy it and/or it makes me feel good? Or am I eating this because I’ve been told it’s healthy and will help me achieve a certain body type?” Personally, I know Snickers bars aren’t super healthy nor do they make me feel great. But I still like to have them from time to time because I enjoy them! But here’s the difference: the Snickers doesn’t have a gold star slapped on it from the fitness gods and flat abs IG models. I’m eating the Snickers for me. So let me ask you, who are you eating protein powder for?
Have you experienced any of the symptoms of my “Then” column as a result of using protein powders?
Do you think it’s worth it to eat something that you don’t enjoy for its nutritional profile and if so, should you do it sometimes / all the time / or plain NEVER!
